Electric City Innovation Center Launches StartUp Town Square

May 3, 2017 (Schenectady, NY) The Electric City Innovation Center (ECIC), a coworking space located at 433 State Street in Schenectady has launched StartUp Town Square, a program to assist aspiring and existing entrepreneurs with support from the business community. Jeff Goronkin, CEO of the ECIC and founder of StartUp Town Square, modeled the program after the highly successful Venture Café based in Cambridge, Massachusettes. “Our events are meant to foster one-to-one relationships, connecting entrepreneurs to investors and others in the business community who can assist them along the commercialization pathway,” said Goronkin.

A typical StartUp Town Square event includes:

· Office Hours

· Programming (presentations, facilitated networking, coaching, etc.)

· Kiosks (demonstration and information tables)

· Networking

StartUp Town Square Advisors

Office Hours is the first portion of the StartUp Town Square event which will be held at the ECIC on May 24, 2017. Entrepreneurs can connect with volunteer advisors who are seasoned investors and successful entrepreneurs, as well as other business professionals, for a 30-minute session. The entrepreneurs can present their company and discuss issues they may be facing and receive valuable feedback. Entrepreneurs can connect with the advisors to set up an Office Hours meeting at the StartUp Town Square website: www.StartUpTownSquare.com.

David Dussault, is a founding StartUp Town Square advisory group member. Dussault is the founder and CEO of P1 Industries, an active investor in startups and an adjunct professor at the Clarkson Business School in Entrepreneurship. “In our company, we encourage everyone to seek out a mentor and become a mentor. The exchange of ideas, experience and connections is vital to both personal growth and the success of our company. StartUp Town Square provides a pathway to extend these relationships into the community and to foster and support innovation and commerce. I encourage anyone interested in any aspect of entrepreneurship to attend an event, volunteer and get involved,” said Dussault.

StartUp Town Square Academic Partner

Union College is collaborating with the Electric City Innovation Center to expose students and faculty to StartUp Town Square entrepreneurial programming and expertise. “Union College is committed to engaging with our community. Many of our alumni are active in business and have already volunteered to participate. Union College students who are interested in entrepreneurship are also getting involved through volunteering and internships,” said Blair Raymond, senior director of external relations.

David Blakelock is one of the founding members of the StartUp Town Square advisory group and will be available to meet with entrepreneurs during Office Hours. Blakelock is an entrepreneur, an active investor in startups and chair of the President’s Council Committee on Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship at Union College. “StartUp Town Square fills a gap in the Capital Region entrepreneurial ecosystem by providing business executives a way to connect with a new generation of entrepreneurs whose businesses may one day become major economic drivers in our community. Union College has many creative and entrepreneurial minds who will benefit from the program. This is a wonderful opportunity and I am excited about participating,” said Blakelock.

StartUp Town Square Community Volunteers

Aspiring entrepreneurs in the community also have an opportunity to get more involved by volunteering at StartUp Town Square events. Chad Putman, founder of Farm Life Boutique and #EggHub is leading the community volunteer effort. “We have a unique opportunity for community members interested in entrepreneurship to get involved and support innovation in our community. Volunteers at StartUp Town Square have the opportunity to network with others who have similar interests and can participate in developing and supporting entrepreneurial programing throughout the year,” said Putman.
